Born in 1161, King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem became one of the most legendary rulers of the Crusader era. Stricken with leprosy at a young age, Baldwin refused to surrender his kingdom or his faith. Against overwhelming odds, he led Christian forces into battle against Saladin, most famously at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, where his outnumbered army achieved a stunning victory. Remembered as the “Leper King,” Baldwin IV became a symbol of courage, perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to Christendom.
