Godfrey of Bouillon was a noble Frankish knight and one of the foremost leaders of the First Crusade. In 1099, he helped capture Jerusalem and was chosen as its ruler, though he refused the title of king, taking instead the title Defender of the Holy Sepulchre. Revered for his piety and leadership, Godfrey played a central role in securing Christian control of the Holy City and establishing a lasting presence for Christendom in the Holy Land.
